Maqam (pl. Maqamat)
1. a system of melody types used in Turkish classical music. It provides a complex set of rules for composing and performance. Each maqam specifies a unique intervalic structure and melodic development. Throughout the history 590 different types of maqamat has been established. However, about 40 maqamat are being used today.
2. translating to "stations" in Arabic, a term that references the various stages a Sufi's soul must attain in its search for God.
